About this work
An insulated sectional has a core bonded between skins. It weighs more than a non-insulated leaf of the same size, so the springs and sometimes the operator have to match that weight. Insulation does not make the door wind-rated.
What is measured
Width, height, headroom, and the jamb, before a model is discussed. The existing spring is not assumed to carry the new mass. A neighbor's door is not a template.
What insulation is not
It is not a design pressure, not a flood product, and not a promise about the temperature in the garage. If a wind label is the actual goal, that is the wind-rated page.
Where the weight shows up
A heavier leaf on a stilt-house opening and a heavier leaf on a Kendall slab both need honest spring math. The buildings are different. The scale is the same idea.
The core changes the weight
An insulated residential section has a core bonded between two skins. It weighs more than a non-insulated leaf of the same size, so the springs, and sometimes the operator, have to match that weight. Insulation does not make the door wind-rated, and it is not a promise about the temperature in the garage. Width, height, headroom, and the jamb are measured before a model is discussed. A neighbor's door is not a template, even on a street of repeated floor plans.
Kits glued to an old skin
A foam kit stuck to an existing section is not the same product as a leaf that was built with a core, and it can change the balance in a way the old springs will not forgive. When replacement is already the right conversation, the usual path is a leaf that was manufactured insulated. If a wind label is the actual goal, that is a separate specification: the leaf, the track, the struts, and the anchor together.
Common questions
Is every insulated door quieter?
Often the core damps some vibration. It does not cure a dry bearing or a bent track. Noise has its own page when that is the complaint.
Can you add insulation to the door I have?
