About this work
The shaft above the opening stores the energy that makes a heavy sectional feel manageable. When a coil lets go, the opener is asked to lift a door it was never meant to carry. In salt air the first visible clue is often chalky metal, not a clean break.
Stop cycling it
If you heard a pop from the header and the door now sits crooked, leave it. Another remote press can dump the remaining coil or throw a cable off the drum. Put a note on the wall button if other people in the house might try it.
Identification is more than color or a guess at the wire
Wire size, inside diameter, length, and wind direction have to agree with the door's weight and the drums on the shaft. Paint color is not an ordering system. A coil that looks right and is wrong will make the door dangerous in the other direction: it will climb on its own.
Salt changes the order of wear
On Key Largo, Marathon, and the lower islands the end bearings and the set screws often corrode into one lump before the coil itself snaps. South Dade garages fail the coil more often from cycle count and a hot roof. We need the island or the town so the hardware on the truck matches that pattern.
Common questions
Can a stronger opener replace a broken torsion spring?
No. The operator is a drive. The spring is the counterbalance. Swapping only the motor leaves the weight on the wrong part.
There are two coils and only one broke. Do both get replaced?
On a matched pair, the surviving coil has the same age and the same salt. The usual practice is to renew the pair so the shaft is not pulled by one fresh coil and one tired one. The visit confirms that on your shaft rather than by rule of thumb alone.
Is it safe to loosen the set screws to look?
No. Those screws are holding stored energy. Measuring and winding belong with the person who brought the bars.
