Lower Keys
Sugarloaf is long, and the houses are not in one village.
About this area
Sugarloaf Key runs a long way beside the highway, with residential pockets rather than a single center. Upper and lower portions of the island are both 'Sugarloaf' in casual speech. A door visit needs the side of the highway and a cross street, because the island does not gather its garages in one place.
- Road
- A long US-1 frontage with pockets of houses
- Housing
- Scattered homes, some on natural shoreline rather than canals
- Constraint
- The address can be several miles from the next pocket
Say which end
Upper Sugarloaf and the lower end are far enough apart that a crew standing at the wrong pull-off loses the stop. Put the end of the island in the note.
Shoreline exposure without a canal grid
Some leaves face open shoreline instead of a dug canal. Spray is less constant and sun is harsher. Peeling paint on a wood door here is often ultraviolet, not the bottom-seal rot seen on canal fingers.
Common questions
Is the bat tower a useful pin?
It tells a local which stretch you mean. It is not an address. Include the street.
Do you cover the Saddlebunch keys under this page?
Those islands are separate, smaller, and not given their own page. If the opening is there, say the island name rather than calling it Sugarloaf.
