South Dade
Florida City is where the mainland grid ends and the island plan begins.
About this area
Florida City is not a Key. It is the last small city before the highway and the Card Sound choice leave the mainland. Agricultural trucks, a tight downtown grid, and slab houses sit in front of the mangroves. A door here is a South Dade door. A wrong part discovered here can still be corrected before a crew is committed to Key Largo.
- Road
- US-1 and Krome Avenue meet the turn for the islands
- Housing
- Small-city slab homes and low commercial bays on the grid
- Role
- Mainland gateway, not an island mile marker
Gateway, not a suburb of Homestead only
Homestead is the larger neighbor. Florida City has its own blocks. A note that says Homestead when the address is Florida City puts the van on the wrong side of the farm traffic. Use the city on the address.
What the doors look like
Most openings are ordinary slab garages, not piers and girders. Bottom sections fail from irrigation and storm water more than from open-bay spray. Say if the house is an exception and the living floor is raised.
Common questions
Do you describe Florida City as part of the Keys?
No. It is the mainland town you pass through. The Keys pages start once the road has committed to the islands.
Can a Florida City stop be the parts handoff for an island job?
Sometimes we sequences it that way. It is not a warehouse, and it is not a promise that parts sit in town.
