Lower Keys
Big Pine is pines and deer, not another canal grid.
About this area
Big Pine Key holds the National Key Deer Refuge. Houses sit among pine rockland, and the roads are posted for the deer. A door here may be on a conventional slab or under a raised house, but the approach is a refuge road, not a marina finger. Night driving and a hurried stop are a bad combination.
- Road
- Key Deer Boulevard and refuge roads off US-1
- Housing
- Houses in pine rockland, mixed raised and slab
- Constraint
- Deer on the roads; no assumption of a fast approach
The approach is part of the job
Crews are expected to drive the posted speeds. If your street is a narrow rockland lane, say that. A van cannot invent a shoulder that is actually habitat.
Hardware still salts, just under pines
Shade slows the sun damage and does not stop chloride. Hinges on a Big Pine door still pit. The difference from Marathon is the vegetation and the roads, not an exemption from corrosion.
Common questions
Will you drive through a neighborhood after dark to 'fit it in'?
We will not plan a refuge-road stop as a rushed after-dark add-on. Deer and narrow lanes make that a poor idea.
Is No Name Key part of this page?
No Name Key is a different, smaller community reached through Big Pine. If the door is there, say No Name Key so the bridge and the street are not guessed.
