About this work
The photo eyes sit a few inches off the floor on either jamb. If they cannot see each other, a modern operator will not close on a remote. The wall button may still close it when held, which is the clue. Sun in a west-facing Homestead driveway and spider webs in a damp Big Pine garage both break that beam.
A short test you can do
With the door open, look for a small indicator on each eye. Wave a foot through the beam. If the indicator does not change, the eyes are misaimed, blocked, or unpowered. Do not climb on a ladder under a half-open door to tap them. Describe the lights instead.
Remotes are a separate conversation
A remote that used to work can lose its code after a board is replaced, after a battery leaks, or after lightning on the power line. A keypad by the jamb has its own wiring and its own code. Tell us which of the three still works: wall button, remote, or keypad.
Wiring on grade-level doors
Under a stilt house the eye wires share space with moisture, crab traps, and the occasional flooded outlet. A staple through the wire looks like a bad eye. The visit traces the pair back to the operator before the eyes themselves are replaced.
Symptoms that belong on a Sensors and remotes note
A door that reverses at the floor, a blinking sensor, or a wall button that only works when you hold it can be the photo-eye symptom. Sun, a knocked bracket, and a true obstruction look similar from the driveway.
What gets checked on a Sensors and remotes visit
Alignment, the brackets, the wire run, and sunlight on the lens are checked before the board is blamed. Headlights through an open stilt bay are a known false trip.
Parts, brands, and this coast
Sensors, brackets, and short wire sections are the parts. A logic board is a different visit if the eyes prove sound. The eyes are part of the operator system, so the LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Linear, Raynor, or SOMMER model still matters. Grade-level bays between piers on the islands take glare that a shaded Kendall garage does not. Say if the opening is open on one side.
How Sensors and remotes is planned on this map
Sensors under a stilt house in Key Largo see headlights and low sun that a closed garage in Palmetto Bay rarely sees. Both can reverse a door at the floor. Bracket height and a clean lens come before a new board. Name the town and say if a side of the bay is open, so the visit brings the right expectation with the operator model. Low sun through an open side is the detail that distinguishes an island bay from a shaded slab.
Common questions
Holding the wall button closes the door. Is that acceptable to leave?
It means the entrapment check is being bypassed by the constant-pressure button. Fine for one careful cycle to get a car out. Not fine as the way the house lives.
I bought a universal remote online. Can you match it?
Bring it. Some learn to the head, some do not, and a remote from a different radio family will not grow a matching receiver by wishing. If it will not learn, we says so before anyone sells you a second one.
Which towns use this trade?
The town buttons on this page cover the Keys and the South Dade approach. Pick the town so the note is not only a symptom.
What should wait until someone is at the opening?
Alignment, the brackets, the wire run, and sunlight on the lens are checked before the board is blamed.
