Insulated Garage Doors in Key West
An insulated door carries a core between two skins and weighs more than a hollow section. Springs have to match that added mass, and sometimes the opener has to be checked for it too. Insulation in the core is not a wind rating for the door. A kit glued to an old skin is not the same as a door built with a core. The opening is measured before anything is ordered, including headroom for the thicker section.
Weight that the springs must carry
People ask for insulation to quiet the door or to soften the summer heat of a closed bay. The core adds weight on every cycle, and tired springs show up as a badly straining opener. A hollow door that is only painted is a different product from one that was built with a core. Windows, decorative hardware, and a taller section add still more real weight to the very same problem.
What to measure before you order
Width, height, and headroom are measured carefully at the opening, not copied from some old invoice. Note whether the current door is hollow or is already insulated, and whether the opener also still strains. Never touch the springs or the cables while you are feeling just how heavy the door has become. A photo of the inside skin helps, taken with the door down so all the section joints show.
Springs first and the opener second
Springs are chosen for the finished weight, including the core and any added struts or windows. The existing opener is checked only after those springs can hold the door up by themselves. A larger motor is simply the wrong answer when the springs are simply far too light for the new door. One damaged section can still be a section repair if the rest of that insulated stack is straight.
Core versus a kit and versus wind
A door built with a core keeps that fill even at the stiles, which a glued panel does not. The wind question is a separate order, measured as a tested assembly if that is what you want. Headroom decides whether a thicker section and its track will fit under the header you have. Color and windows are chosen at the opening so the new weight is known before the springs are sized.
Insulated doors on cottages and open bays
Cottages on narrow lanes may want a quieter door, and the measure still starts with headroom under the beam. Salt air on steel hardware continues, and insulation does not stop hinges and rollers from roughening. Raised houses with cars at grade leave even an insulated door in the weather at the parking level. Storms and power cuts leave the weight unchanged, but they show if the springs can move the door.

Common questions
Do insulated garage doors need different springs than a plain hollow door?
Yes, the core adds real weight, and the springs have to match that finished door. An opener is checked only after the springs can hold the door. Ordering from a guess, without measuring, is how the weight comes out wrong.
Is insulation in a garage door the same thing as a wind rating?
The core changes weight and how the door feels, and the rating is a separate tested assembly. A glued kit on an old skin is a different build from a door made with a core. If a rating is the goal, the opening is measured for that assembly.
Can the current opener still lift a heavier insulated replacement on this opening?
Sometimes it can, once the springs are matched to the new weight. A motor that already strains on the old door may not be the one to keep. That choice is made after the weigh, not from the badge on the housing.
