Insulated Garage Doors in Stock Island

An insulated door has a core between the skins, and it weighs more than a hollow section. The door springs have to match that extra weight, and sometimes the opener does too. People often ask for insulation because the garage is hot, noisy, or under a living room. Extra insulation on a sectional is not a wind rating for that one particular door. A kit glued to an old skin differs from a door that was built with a core.

Heavier than hollow doors

A hollow door and an insulated one of the same size do not feel the same. The opener may strain or hum if the springs were never changed for the new weight. Glued foam on an old skin can still peel, and it differs from a factory core. Heat in the garage and noise from the street are the usual reasons people often ask. A door that was ordered insulated also needs its springs matched before it is ever blamed.

What you can compare

You can look at a cut edge or sticker to see whether a core is present. Do not even peel off a glued panel, and never touch the springs or the cables. Note whether the opener strains on the way up, which can mean the springs are light. Measuring is done on site, so a rough width from memory is only just a start. If the door is already bowed or split, that is a repair talk before any insulation.

Springs and the opener

We carefully measure the whole opening before anything is ordered, including a new cored section. Springs are matched to the real weight, and the old springs are not reused on a guess. The opener is checked against that weight, and it is replaced only when it cannot lift. A glued kit is removed when it is peeling, and a built core is a different order. One heavy door with tired springs is a spring job, and the insulation can stay.

Core versus glued foam

A factory core is bonded between skins, and foam stuck on afterward is a different product. The word insulated on a quote does not name the thickness or the real finished door weight. The available headroom and the spring pads both have to fit that heavier door stack. Color and the face style are chosen at the opening, fully separate from the core. Balance is felt with the trolley released so the new weight is not hidden by the motor.

Weight in salty air

Older houses among the boatyards want a door on an open bay by a narrow spur. Salt spray still easily reaches the outside steel skin, and insulation does not stop that film. An open bay under the living floor can be hot and loud, which is why people ask. The springs are matched either way, and the spray is a hardware fact beside the core. Mention an open bay so the weight, the exposure, and the opener are planned together.

Common questions

Does insulation make a garage door wind rated?

Insulation on a sectional is a core or a lining, separate from a wind test. The springs still have to match the weight of the heavier door. A glued sheet on an old skin is a different build from a factory core.

Will my opener lift an insulated door?

Sometimes the opener can lift the new weight, and sometimes it cannot. The door is weighed, and the opener is replaced only when it cannot do the work. Springs are matched ahead of the opener in that plan, because they carry weight.

Is a foam kit the same as an insulated door?

A kit glued on an old skin differs from a door built with a core. Peeling foam is removed, and a real core is ordered to the measured opening. Either way the springs have to match the weight that is actually hung.
