Cable Repair in Goulds
Cable repair covers lift cables that have gone slack, frayed, or jumped off the drum. People search it when the door rises on one side or hangs with a loose strand over the car. A cable off the drum lets one side climb while the other lags, and the door can twist. One frayed cable on a straight door is a repair, while a twisted door may need a section too.
Slack, fray, and a crooked rise
Slack in one cable shows up as a door that lifts higher on the tight side than the other. A frayed strand looks fuzzy near the drum or just above the bottom bracket. When the cable has jumped the drum, you may see loops of wire loose above the door. The door can cock in the opening, and running it again often bends a track or creases a section.
Leave the cable where it lies
Do not touch the cable, the drum, or the bottom bracket, even to tuck a loose strand back. Park the door and stop using the opener, because another cycle can twist the sections. Keep people and cars out of the opening until the line is back on the drum and balanced. Never touch the springs or the set screws while a cable is slack or off its drum.
Cable, drum, and bracket together
The repair treats the cable, the drum, and the bottom bracket as one assembly. A frayed cable on a door that is still straight is replaced, and the drum is checked for grooves. If the cable let go and the door twisted, a creased section may have to come off too. Balance is set after the new line is on, so the opener is not asked to drag a crooked door.
How the cable rides the drum
Each cable anchors at the bottom bracket and winds onto a drum at the end of the shaft. The drum diameter and the spring together set how the door feels through the travel. A drum with a chewed groove will cut a new cable, so that drum is changed with the wire. Bottom brackets that have bent or pulled their bolts are replaced rather than bent back. Both sides get compared, because a fresh cable beside a tired mate can cock the door.
Damp air and cables on older doors
Modest older slab houses often still have original cables on a door that has been painted more than once. Humidity wicks along the strands, so fuzz and orange dust show up before the whole door looks ruined. A roof that holds heat dries and then dampens that steel through the day, and age opens the strands. Some driveways sit close to US-1, and grit blown at the bottom bracket speeds that fray. Age and humidity are why a one-sided lift here is often the cable and the drum.

Common questions
Why does the garage door rise higher on one side?
A cable that has stretched, frayed, or left the drum lets one side climb ahead of the other. The bottom bracket and the drum on that side are part of the same fault. Running the door again can twist a section, so the door should stay parked.
Can a frayed cable be replaced by itself?
One frayed cable on a door that is still straight is a cable, drum, and bracket repair. A scored drum is changed with the cable so the new wire is not cut on the old groove. A door that twisted when the cable let go may need a section as well.
Is a loose cable safe to push back onto the drum?
A loose cable can still be loaded, and pushing it onto the drum by hand is unsafe. The drum, the bottom bracket, and the springs are handled together once the door is secured. Park the door and keep people clear until that work is done.
