Extension Spring Repair in Cutler Bay

Request this service+1 (645) 256-1794

Extension spring repair is for coils that stretch beside the horizontal track, common on older single doors. A broken one looks like a loose coil hanging above the car. The safety cable is what keeps that coil from flying across the garage. People notice the loose spring, a door that suddenly pulls crooked, or a gap where the coil used to run. Park the door and leave the remaining spring to hold it until the pair is handled.

A loose coil above the car

Extension springs run front to back along the horizontal track, one on each side. When one breaks, you see a limp coil instead of a stretched spring beside the rail. The door then travels crooked, because the other spring is doing all the pulling. A pulley that has gone flat often shows up with the failed coil. This layout is a different system from a torsion shaft mounted over the header.

Leave the coils alone

Park the door as soon as you see the loose coil, and keep people out of the garage. Do not touch the coils, the pulleys, or the safety cable running through the center. Never turn a set screw, and never try to stretch the broken spring back into place. You can look from the floor and see whether one coil or both have let go. Color on the coil is only a hint, and color bands are not a full specification.

Cables, pulleys, and the pair

We replace the broken extension spring and the safety cable that is supposed to hold it. A flat pulley is changed in the same visit, because it will chew the next line. Both sides are checked, since the calm spring has the same age as the one that opened. A torsion cone does not repair this layout, because these springs stretch instead of winding on a shaft. The door is run only after both sides share the pull again.

Safety cable and the stretch

The safety cable runs through the coil so a break does not throw steel across the car. If that cable is missing or has slipped the bracket, it is replaced with the spring. The pulleys at each end steer the stretch, and a grooved wheel ruins a new coil. We size the springs from the door, not from a faded band on the old coil. The opener stays out of the choice until the door is light by hand.

Older bays and newer tracts

Extension springs still show on older single doors in an enclosed garage on a concrete slab. Lots under the Old Cutler canopy are where that older layout turns up most often. Newer tract aprons usually have a torsion shaft instead, under a hot roof over a double door. Humidity and sprinklers rust the side coils and pulleys more often than sea spray does. A loose coil is still this repair, whether the apron is shaded or sitting in the sun.

Common questions

What does a broken extension spring look like?

A broken extension spring hangs as a loose coil above the car, beside the horizontal track. The safety cable through the middle is what keeps the pieces from flying. Park the door there, and keep people away from the opening.

Are the colored bands enough to order a spring?

Paint left on the coil is only a hint, so the door's size and weight set the spring. Both sides are checked, because the spring that still looks calm is usually the same age. The safety cable and the pulleys are part of that same order.

Can a torsion part fix springs beside the track?

Hardware made for a shaft above the door does not belong on coils that stretch beside the track. The safety cable, the pulleys, and both coils are the pieces this layout uses. The door stays parked until the pull on the two sides is even again.
