Extension Spring Repair in Pinecrest

Request this service+1 (645) 256-1794

Extension spring repair is for coils that stretch beside the horizontal track, common on older single-car doors. A broken one looks like a loose coil hanging above the car. The safety cable through that spring is what keeps a broken coil from flying. People search this after a bang, a suddenly heavy door, or a spring that is no longer taut. A torsion cone does not repair this layout. Color on the spring is only a clue, not a full specification.

A loose coil above the car

The spring runs beside the horizontal track, one on each side of an older door. When it breaks, the coil bunches or droops instead of staying stretched. The door may hang heavy, rise crooked, or fail to stay up. You might see the safety cable still threaded through the loose windings, or you might see that cable slack too.

Park the door and stay off the coils

Leave the door parked, whether it is down or only partly open, and stop using the opener. Keep people out of the bay, especially away from the loose coil above the car. Do not touch the coils, the safety cable, or the pulleys, and never touch a set screw if a torsion shaft is also present. Do not try to stretch the spring back into place by hand. A photo from the floor can show that loose coil.

Safety cable and a matched spring

The safety cable is inspected and replaced if it is frayed, missing, or no longer able to contain the spring. The broken spring is replaced with one specified from the door, not from the paint bands alone. The other side is checked because the two springs share cycles, and a tired mate fails soon after the one that opened. Pulleys and clips that carried the old spring are part of the same hardware. Balance is confirmed so the door does not creep once both sides are connected again.

Why the color bands are not enough

Colored bands mark a family of springs and leave out details the door still needs. Wire, length, and stretch have to agree with this opening or the door pulls to one side. A torsion cone, the winding hardware for a shaft above the door, does not repair coils that live beside the track. If your door has a shaft over the header instead, the torsion repair is the one that fits. Say which of those you can see from the floor.

Older bays inside larger garages

Many larger enclosed garages use a torsion shaft, while an older single bay can still carry extension springs beside the track. Shade does not tell those two layouts apart. Deep setbacks show up on both older and newer houses, and the coils still have to be seen from the floor. Any opener on that door sits under a hot attic and stays idle when a side spring has opened. The safety cable remains what keeps a broken extension spring from flying across the bay.

Common questions

What does a broken extension spring look like?

It looks like a loose coil above the car, beside the horizontal track, instead of a stretched spring. The safety cable may still run through the middle of that coil. The door often feels heavy or rises unevenly after the bang.

Are the colored marks enough to order a spring?

The color bands narrow the family and leave out the full specification this door needs. Wire, length, and stretch are confirmed from the opening. Ordering from the band color alone can pull the door crooked.

Can a torsion part fix an extension spring?

A torsion cone belongs to a shaft spring above the door and does not repair side coils. The safety cable, pulleys, and a spring matched to this door are the repair. If you see a shaft over the header instead of side coils, you have the other layout.
