Glass Garage Doors in Marathon
Glass and aluminum doors in Marathon use a frame and glass that often weigh more than they look. One cracked pane in a straight frame can be glass only, and a twisted frame is a different repair. The glass by itself is not a wind rating, even when the opening is full of it. Aluminum does not rust the way the steel hinges on the same door can rust. We measure the frame, the panes, and the springs before any glass or section is ordered.
Heavier than the glass looks
An aluminum frame with several panes can outweigh a plain steel section of the same size. The springs have to match that weight, and the opener may need a check too. A door that has started to feel heavy may be springs, not a failed motor. We weigh the moving door by hand before anyone orders a larger opener. Glass rows added in the plan change the weight again, so they are counted up front too.
One pane or a twisted frame
A single cracked pane in a frame that is still square can be a glass replacement. A frame that is twisted, racked, or pulled out of the track is not a pane job. The hinges and rollers have to sit square before new glass is worth putting in. We look at the frame from inside and outside to see which case this is. Replacing glass in a crooked frame only hides the problem until the next crack.
Glass and a wind rating
A rating belongs to a tested assembly, and the panes are only one piece of that story. Glass alone does not carry the label even when the opening is full of it. If a rated build is the goal, the measure includes track, anchors, and the frame together. If the goal is light and a view, we stay with the frame and the panes. Those two goals can be combined, and they have to be named before the order.
Aluminum and the steel hardware
Aluminum frames do not rust the way the steel hinges and rollers on the same door do. You can see orange dust on the hinges while the frame stays bright. Those steel pieces are replaced when they are pitted, and sound ones stay. The frame finish is separate, and a chalky frame may need attention of its own. We do not treat a rusty hinge as a reason to condemn the whole aluminum door.
Light salt and open frames
Canal-front houses and interior blocks in Marathon put different light and air on a glass door. Some homes park at grade under the living floor, so the frame stands in open air. Humidity and salt on those bays mark the steel hinges even when the aluminum stays clean. The highway is not the driveway, and the frame is still measured at the house. Glare through the panes can also trip photo eyes, and that is checked with the glass.

Common questions
Can one cracked pane be replaced by itself?
One cracked pane in a straight frame can be glass only, without a new door. A twisted frame is a different repair, and new glass would not stay true in it. We check the frame and the hinges before the pane is ordered.
Does the glass make the door wind rated?
Glass by itself does not make this door wind rated at all. A rating is a tested assembly of frame, track, and anchors together. A view through the panes can be ordered without that rating if you want the light.
Why do the hinges rust if the frame does not?
Aluminum does not rust like the steel hinges and rollers on the same door. Orange dust on those hinges can be hardware work while the frame stays. Pitted hinges are replaced, and hinges that still turn are left alone.
