Wind-Rated Garage Doors in Key West

Cottage beams and raised fill divide the garage openings here, and neither condition is a design pressure. A beam may cross above a cottage door and remove headroom a catalog drawing expects. On raised fill the leaf often stands in open weather, exposed at grade under the floor above. Salt air and west sun shape the hardware and the face, which is exposure rather than a rating. The rating is the leaf, the track, the hardware, and the fastening tested together. Insulation is separate, a lone strut is not a label, and impact glass does not rate the door. Narrow lanes off North Roosevelt and White Street only decide where a van can wait.

Under the beam or on the fill

Low headroom under a cottage beam changes which rated builds exist, and a glass row makes that same change. A raised house may show a clearer header, with the whole leaf standing out in the weather. Width, height, headroom, and side room are taken under the beam or beneath the floor above. West sun on the wall is a clue about the finish, not a figure copied onto an order.

Where a van can wait

Some lanes are too narrow for a van to stand at the opening, so say where it can wait. Name the side street you would give a driver, including a turn off North Roosevelt or White Street. Both roads carry local runs and still need the exact lane, because salt air does not widen the pavement. A brochure does not rate a cottage jamb, and a picture from a wider street is not a specification.

What salt and sun change

Salt air belongs in the hardware choice from the start, and west sun on the wall joins that exposure. Neither condition writes a design pressure, and neither one selects the leaf by itself. Included struts ship inside the tested assembly when the build needs them on site. A bar screwed to an ordinary leaf does not borrow that test, and impact windows leave the garage door unspecified. If the leaf is original, say so, because leftover track may not join a rated build.

The number comes from the sheet

Building paperwork stays with you, and no lane name invents the design pressure this opening must meet. Bring the specification if it is already written, and say if the paper is not ready yet. The measure turns a beam limit into a headroom number the order can actually use. The opening can still be recorded while you confirm the requirement you are trying to meet.

Two walls to fasten

Fastening suits a cottage jamb or a fill wall, in wood, masonry, or a material still unknown. If the current door is unsafe, describe that apart from the rated order so it is handled on its own. A raised house may keep the track in open air, while a cottage keeps the shaft beside a beam. Those are different limits on headroom and on where the anchors are allowed to land.

Common questions

How do cottage beams affect the rating?

A cottage beam can cut the headroom a rated build expects, and glass under that beam narrows the choices. The width, the height, and the side room still come from under that beam. A house on raised fill is a different header and receives a tape of its own.

Does west sun assign a design pressure?

West sun and salt describe exposure on the outside face, and they assign no design pressure to the opening. The tested assembly still includes the leaf, the track, the hardware, and the fastening chosen for this wall.

Who keeps the Key West file?

You keep the building paperwork, and a cottage beam limits headroom without holding that file. Bring the written specification you are using so the assembly can be checked against it.
