Hurricane Bracing in South Miami
Hurricane bracing here means horizontal struts on the door you already have, added to stiffen it. A strut is not a wind rating, and adding one does not file any paperwork. The extra weight changes balance, so the springs and the opener are checked after the struts are on. South Miami visits also look at track and jamb fasteners, which are a separate question from the strut itself.
What the struts do
Horizontal struts stiffen the sections so the door flexes less when the wind pushes on it. They add weight, which the springs may not have been chosen to carry. A door that was balanced before the struts can drift, fall, or strain the opener afterward. The struts do not turn an ordinary door into a tested wind assembly. Track bolts and jamb fasteners can be loose on their own, and a strut does not tighten them.
What you can see without tools
Count the sections and notice whether any strut is already on the door, and whether it is straight. Do not drill the sections, and do not remove a strut to watch the door flex. Never touch springs, cables, or set screws while you are only looking at braces and fasteners. Photos of the full door and of the jamb brackets show what the visit will add or adjust.
Stiffen the door and rebalance
The visit fits horizontal struts to the sections and then checks balance with the added weight. Springs are adjusted or replaced when the door no longer stays where a hand puts it. The opener is watched for strain, and it is not asked to lift a door the springs no longer help. Track and jamb fasteners are tightened or replaced when they are loose, as their own task. A strut layout that the header cannot clear is changed before holes are committed.
Rating, paperwork, and fasteners
A strut is reinforcement and weight on the existing door, and the rating question is a different product. No building paperwork is filed for struts added on this visit. The tested path, when someone wants a rating, is a full assembly measured to the opening. Jamb fasteners and track brackets hold the door to the building, and they are inspected separately. Struts that are too few, or placed where a hinge needs the face, are rearranged so the door still articulates.
Struts on low older doors
Older shaded city lots have more single-car openings and lower headroom than a new tract, so strut depth matters. A door in South Miami may have little spare room at the header once a strut stands off the skin. The hot ceiling is close to that hardware, and a heavy strutted door feels it in the balance. Shade along Sunset Drive cools the face the wind actually pushes on.

Common questions
Do horizontal struts make my existing door wind rated?
No, struts stiffen the door you have and add weight, and they do not create a rating. A wind rating belongs to a tested assembly of door, track, struts, and anchors. Balance is checked because that added weight changes how the door hangs.
Will you file paperwork for the bracing?
No paperwork is filed when struts are added to the existing door. The visit is the struts, the balance, and a look at track and jamb fasteners. A rated assembly, if that is the real goal, is measured as its own job.
Why does the door feel heavier after struts are installed?
Each strut adds weight the springs may not have been built to offset. The door can drift or make the opener strain until the balance is corrected. That check is part of the bracing visit and is finished before the door goes back into daily use.
