Extension Spring Repair in Princeton
Extension springs stretch beside the horizontal track, mostly on older single-car doors. A broken one looks like a loose coil hanging above the car, with the door suddenly heavy. The safety cable through that spring is what keeps a broken coil from flying across the garage. Color bands on the spring are not a full specification. A torsion cone does not repair this layout, because the springs are not on a shaft above the door.
What a loose coil above the car means
The spring that failed has pulled apart, and the coil that used to stretch along the track now hangs slack. The door feels heavy, may rise on one side, or sits down and barely moves. The matching spring on the other side is still stretched and is now carrying more than its share. A pulley, a clip, or the safety cable can fail with the spring and leave hardware in the horizontal track.
Leave the door parked and the coils alone
Leave the door where it stopped, and do not pull the release or cycle the opener. You can look from the floor and see which side is slack and whether a cable runs through the coil. Do not tug the spring, the pulley, or the safety cable to make the door look even. Never touch the springs, the cables, or any set screw while the coil is loose.
Safety cable color and the pair
The safety cable is inspected and replaced if it is frayed, missing, or disconnected at the frame. Both extension springs are considered together, because the survivor has the same age as the one that opened. Pulleys and clips that chewed the old spring are replaced so the new coil rides cleanly. The door is balanced with the opener disconnected, and it should stay put without either spring fully slack.
Why a torsion cone does not belong
Extension springs work in pairs along the horizontal tracks, with pulleys redirecting the pull to the bottom brackets. There is no winding cone above door, so torsion parts do not bolt onto this system and make it safe. The safety cable is unique to side-spring setup and has to be in place before the door is used again.
Older single doors under hot roofs
This layout still shows up on older single-car doors in unconditioned slab garages under hot roofs. Stored heat and years of cycles open a coil that was already tired, usually on one side. Lots along US-1 and deeper lots toward farmland both have these older bays mixed with newer torsion doors. Say whether the loose coil is above the car on the left, the right, or both tracks.

Common questions
What does a loose coil above the car mean?
A loose coil above the car is an extension spring that has broken beside the horizontal track. The door turns heavy, and the other spring is suddenly carrying the load alone. The safety cable is what keeps that broken coil from flying, so the door should stay parked.
Are the paint bands on the spring enough to order a match?
Color bands narrow the type, and the door weight, height, and stretch beside the track still decide the spring. That measured set is what gets ordered for the pair. Both sides are considered together so the survivor is not left to fail on its own.
Can torsion hardware repair a door with side springs?
A torsion cone and a shaft kit do not repair an extension-spring door. This layout uses springs beside the tracks, plus pulleys, clips, and a safety cable. Parts from a torsion door do not bolt on and make the old system sound.
