Extension Spring Repair in Florida City

Request this service+1 (645) 256-1794

Extension spring repair is for the springs that stretch beside the horizontal track, common on older single car doors. A broken one looks like a loose coil hanging above the car. The safety cable running through that coil is what keeps a break from flying across the bay. People search this after a bang, a door that suddenly feels heavy, or a spring on the floor. The spring type has to be named from what you see, so the parts match the layout.

A loose coil above the car

The springs live along the horizontal track, one over each side, stretching as the door comes down. When one breaks, you may see a gap, a coil on the track, or cable slack at that side. The door can hang crooked because one side has lost its pull. Color bands on the spring are only a partial clue and do not name the full size. A torsion spring on a shaft above the door is a different system with a different repair.

Park the door and stand clear

Leave the door parked, whether it is open, closed, or stuck partway. Do not touch the coils, the safety cable, or the pulleys at the corners. Keep people out of the bay, because a spring that is still stretching can move if it is bumped. Never grab a set screw or a torsion shaft thinking it will calm an extension spring. If the door is down, leave it down and do not test the release.

Safety cable and a matched pair

The visit replaces the broken spring and checks the safety cable that runs through the center. When the mate on the other side is the same age, both are replaced so the door pulls evenly. Pulleys, clips, and the cable are inspected because a break can damage them. The door is balanced after the new springs are on, with the opener disconnected. Color bands help the first guess, and the door size finishes the specification.

Why a torsion cone will not fit

Extension springs store energy by stretching, and torsion springs store it by winding on a shaft. Hardware from a torsion cone cannot be adapted to the stretch layout beside the track. The safety cable is specific to this style and has to be in place on the new spring. A door that has been converted needs to be identified from the track, not from memory. Saying you see coils above the car, rather than a shaft over the door, keeps the parts right.

Single bays under low hot roofs

Extension springs show up on older single car doors in these smaller slab garages. Hot roofs leave little air around the horizontal track where those springs stretch. Heat ages that older hardware, including the safety cable inside the coil. The tight grid has many of these original single bays still in daily use. US-1 traffic nearby does not tell you which spring layout is over the car.

Common questions

What does a broken extension spring look like?

It looks like a loose coil above the car, beside the horizontal track. The door may feel heavy or sit crooked in the opening itself. Leave the coils alone and keep people out of the bay until the visit.

Can you use torsion parts on this door?

A torsion cone is not a repair for an extension spring layout. The springs, pulleys, and safety cable belong to the stretch system beside the track. Naming what you see above the car keeps the correct parts on the visit.

Are the colored bands enough to order a spring?

Color bands are only a partial clue and do not give the full specification. The door weight, the height, and the track setup finish that spring choice. Both sides are often replaced together when one spring has already broken.
