Extension Spring Repair in Stock Island

Request this service+1 (645) 256-1794

Extension spring repair is the careful work for coils that stretch along beside the horizontal track. They are common on older single car doors, and a broken one hangs as a loose coil above the car. The safety cable is what keeps that loose coil from flying across the garage. Leave the door parked, keep people clear, and do not touch the coils. A torsion cone does not repair this layout, because these springs do not wind on a shaft.

Coils beside the track

A broken extension spring looks like a loose coil in the air above the parked car. The safety cable may be the only straight line left running through that broken coil. The door often sits crooked, because one side still has spring and the other does not. An opener that keeps running will drag that unbalanced door and can walk a roller out. Color on the coil is only paint, and the door itself sets the spring that belongs there.

Leave the door parked

Park the door once you see the loose coil and stop using the wall control button. Do not touch the coils, the pulleys, or the cables while the remaining spring is loaded. Never grab the loose metal, and keep people out from under the opening. You can note which side let go, and whether the door is up, down, or already crooked. A photo of the coil beside the track, taken from the floor, is enough to show the layout.

Cable pulleys and balance

The visit replaces the broken spring and checks the safety cable that should run through it. A missing safety cable is part of the repair, with any pulley that has gone flat. Both sides are checked, because the second spring shares the age of the one that opened. The door is balanced after the springs are on, so it stays where it is left. One remaining spring is not left to pull the door crooked while the opener drags it.

Color bands and layout

These springs stretch from the front of the horizontal track toward the back of the garage. A torsion shaft above the door is different, and a torsion cone cannot fix this one. Color bands on the coil leave out the length and the pull the door actually needs. The safety cable, rather than the paint, is what contains a coil if it breaks again. Pulleys that have flattened are changed so the new cable is not chewed on future runs.

Older single car bays

Older houses among the boatyards still carry this layout on single openings along a narrow spur. Salt spray reaches those side coils, especially where an open bay leaves them in the weather. A loose coil above the car is still an extension spring, chalky metal or quite clean. The safety cable matters more in a tight bay, where a flying coil has little room. Mention an open bay and a single opening, because both change how the hardware has aged.

Common questions

What does a broken extension spring look like here?

A broken extension spring hangs as a loose coil above the car, often held by the safety cable. The door may sit crooked because one side has lost its pull. Park it there, keep people fully clear, and leave the coils untouched.

Can a torsion part fix these side springs?

A torsion cone does not repair springs that stretch beside the horizontal track. The layout is read from hardware on the door, not from a color band. Safety cables and pulleys are part of putting that side spring system back in order.

Do both of the extension springs get replaced?

Both springs are replaced, because the second shares the age of the one that opened. A flat pulley is changed at the same time so it does not chew cable. The door is balanced before it is put back into daily use.
